Exosome Biogenesis and Cell-Cell Communication
Extracellular vesicles include apoptosis bodies, microvesicles (MVs) and exosomes. Exosomes are first made as a population of heterogeneous intraluminal vesicles (ILVs), developing through the inward budding of the multivesicular body (MVB). The MVB will either fuse with lysosomes or fuse with the cell membrane to secrete exosomes out of the cell. Secreted exosomes can be taken by other cells by endocytosis, micropinocytosis or phagocytosis, and their contents can influence cellular processes.
